#BREAK# You are trying to simulate nature here. If you are going for trout in a stream, for instance, this means a drag-free float of 36 inches over a precise spot that marks the window of a feeding fish.

Also remember that the Evening Secret ( #BREAK# eveningsecretfishing.com/specialsecret/4_Fly_Fishing_Tips.php" target=new>http://www.eveningsecretfishing.com/specialsecret/4_Fly_Fishing_Tips.php) will swarm fish to your spot consistantly, and help you catch more fish.

Never randomly cast you have got to pick a spot and hit it. Throw tight loops that put the fly on target. One important method that can be used is to overcast the target and stop the line short while it is in the air. The fly should come back to you and fall on the water with slack in the leader.

The best trout fishermen fish with only 30 to 35 fee

#BREAK# They read waters will and put the fly in the p ay zone time after time. One of the most important thins they do is to recognize that presentation and approach are much more important than pattern.

It is different for bass. Whether a surface bug or a streamer, the offering must move past a spot where a bass is apt to hold. As the boat drifts, it is important to pick a precise time to shoot a cast to the target. Too soon or too late, and the fly wont be in the right spot. This is where the double haul form of casting becomes essential. It gene

#BREAK#

When bassing, make your presentation, retrieve 10 to 20 feet, pick up, and cast again without the need to false cast. After each one, drop the rod type and keep the butt of the rod near your belt buckle with the tip-top of the rod pointing at the line. A simple lift will let you execute the next pickup or strike a fish.

#BREAK# The best way to do this is to nail-knot a six-inch piece of 25-30 pound leader material to the end of the fly line. A loop like those found on snelled hooks is then tied into the opposite end. The connecting leader must also have a loop.

Connecting the leader itself is done by passing the loop attached to the fly line through the loop on the leader; reaching through the fly line loop. Next, grab the butt section of the le

#BREAK# Last, just pull the loops together by tugging on the fly line and the butt section in opposite directions.

Strategy

If you are every in a situation where see large brown trout in open water and hold, your best bet is to use a No. 12 Cinnamon Ant and sink it. If this doesnt work, move to the No.16 Adams fly. Still nothing? Switch to the No. 20 Black Ant. Last-ditch effort would be to use a 3X tippet and use a No. 6 nymph or streamer.

Typically the bigger trout will leave small morsels to the small guys, preferring the bigger bites that are easy to get.

#BREAK#

High Rider Dry Flys

If your best dry-fly patterns are failing you, it may be time to switch to spiders and variants. Many times a spider or variant will bring trout to the surface, then you can switch back to a conventional dry fly.

These spiders and variants will delicately drop to the water, usually somersaulting or jumping after touching it. Fish find this very alluring.

High riding is another attribute of these flies. When tied properly, their hackles support the hook above the waters surface, thus imitating a natural fly much more closely than the ordinary fly does.

Given that tying your own flies provides so much satisfaction, why buy flies online?

Obtain local fly patterns

The first reason is that as your fly fishing experience grows, your desire to test new and foreign waters increases. As a result, your need for localized patterns becomes more important. Sure, you want to do the research and tie your own variations of the Club Sandwich befo

Next, research local shops on the internet - find out who the proprietors are and when they are open for business. There comes a time in which your energy is better focused on fishing than tying flies. A typical North American fly-fisher

#BREAK# Many fisherman focus the bulk of their tying efforts on the winter months to prepare for spring, summer, and fall fishing. If you are one of those anglers who feel like they never have enough flies, purchasing your "basic" flies online can leave you time to focus on the more specialized, region-specific flies that you might not find on the web. For example, why not buy your attractor flies such as Adams or Stimulators, so that you can concentrate on the special mayfly flies that you know will require special attention to detail? No matter what you want to purchase, nothing beats the internet for window shopping. I have seen the same fly pattern tied three different ways on three different sites. This variety allows you to find the best pattern that matches your intended fishing location. For example, if you plan to fish faster moving water, your parachute patterns might need a bit more hackle, or even a brighter post. On the other hand, if you plan to fish tailwaters, your mayfly patterns might need to sit lower on the water. By the same token, if you intend to fish mostly in the spring, your mayfly patterns might need to be a lighter color than if you intend to fish in the fall.

One disadvantage is that you dont get to inspect the flies before you purchase them, unlike in a store. I recommend buying a few different patterns your first time so that you can determine not only the quality of the flies, but the consistency of the quality across different patterns. For example, a good initial purchase might include a stonefly nymph, a caddis pattern, a mayfly emerger, a mayfly dun, and an attractor pattern. This way you

Types of web sites

There are hundreds of web sites that sell flies online. These sites fall into two categories: companies that only sell flies, and fly shop owners who run web sites for their businesses.

Businesses whose sole purpose is to sell flies online usually have a greater amount of flies available. One advantage these sites offer is that they are more likely to offer discounts on larger purchases. Also, their web sites tend to be more user-friendly (though not always). Many of

#BREAK# The best of these sites allow you to set up personal accounts or use "shopping carts" to store your selections before purchasing. In this manner, the purchase experience is more convenient. Shopping carts tend to be "persistent" - in that a visitor may select items to the cart one day and return to the site at later time to find that the shopping cart still contains the previous selections. This allows you to select items you are interested in, leave the site and do more research, then alter or add to your selections later.

Fly shop web sites, on the other hand, typically present the user with flies specifically relevant t

#BREAK# You have a better chance of purchasing flies that are most effective to the area you want to fish if you purchase them from local fly shops. Furthermore, you are supporting the local economy of the area in which you desire to fish. Many fly shop web sites also include online hatch charts which can inform you of flies you most likely need.

The authors experience

In the spring, and summer I do a lot of fishing on the Delaware River in the Catskills Mountains of New York. Throughout the winter I will tie a decent amount of the flies I actually need. As spring approaches, I have found that supplementing my collection with web-bought flies ensures that I am ready to meet the various hatches e

#BREAK# Any Delaware River fly fisherman will tell you that hatch-matching is a critical part of success on this river. In my limited experience, I have encountered days in which four or five different hatches took place. On top of that, the hatches change from week to week. I have ensured a decent modicum of success by checking local hatch charts ahead of time and then purchasing a dozen flies from week to week.

Hopefully, these tips will help you increase the amount of flies you own, and enhance your fly-fishing experience.

The trigger of the gun will release a spear that could pin a grown man to the wall. To the novice, Spear fishing is difficult. Before our d

With this in mind we descended on to the reef with scuba tanks. Eric shot first and hit a snapper, which he duly cut up in the water to lure other fish. However, this also attracts sharks and other less salubrious creatures.

A hogfish, a pink fish with a rooster-like crown, darted out. I fired my first shot. The spear missed by a foot, hopelessly losing its trajectory after a few meters and falling to the sandy ocean floor. As we swam around the reef, the hunt continued as snapper and hogfish swam out, reflexively dodgin

Eric later told me that just before I fired each time, my adrenaline rush would become obvious as bubbles would spill out from my regulator. The metallic inhalatory noises of my regulator scared the fish as I lined up my shots.

And then, finally, I swam above a school of yellowtail snappers. I tried to regulate my breathing, squeezed the trigger and the spear fizzed through the water. The fish was harpooned dead center and wriggled on the spear as it followed a downward curve to the bottom. Eric pulled the fish off and stuffed

So exhilarated by my success, I start to breathe excitedly and my lungs fill with so much air that I begin to float to the surface. I force myself to kick down and resume the hunt, shooting two more -a Lane Snapper and a French Grunt.

With minutes of the dive left, the predators - smelling blood - arrive. The Moray Eel, capable of knotting itself around prey as well as severing anything with its razor-sharp teeth, wont let us pass - much like a Mafia taxman of the deep, demanding his share of our catch. #BREAK# I use 30-pound line, large capacity reels, 8-foot heavy action rods, 2 oz. Egg sinkers, barrel swivels and #7/0 circle hooks.

Basically a Carolina Rig, I have a hook with an 18-inch leader tied to your barrel swivel, which is connected to your main line, which is where your egg sinker is attached. My boat is equipped with steel rod holders, a hand-controlled trolling motor, two fish locators, a big dip net and marker buoys. My equipment is not the most expensive but it is practi

#BREAK# The main thing to remember is to keep whatever equipment you use in good condition. Many know all too well about the disasters that can be caused by old line and improperly maintained fishing equipment and big Blues will test everything from your knots to your rod holders. If there is a weak link, they will expose it.

Find the Big Fish

You need to know how to tell the difference between larger fish and bait fish while using your fish locator.

There are two main structures that I catch Blue Cats on: ledges and humps. Blue Cats are creatures of edges and they seem to

#BREAK# The one-two punch comes when you find these structures with both bait fish and big fish mixed together on your locator. There are very few spots that I will stop and fish where I dont see either big fish or bait fish on my locator. The ledges that I primarily fish are old river channels edges. The fish can be scattered up and down the edge but the best fishing occurs when they are on the top.

Catching Them

Typically, when I set up to fish these ledges, I run my boat over them and throw out my marker buoy where I see the fish. A little trick to using your

#BREAK# If you drop the marker right on top of the fish, you will be bumping it and will eventually move it while the wind is pushing you around. If you throw it upwind of the fish, you can run your trolling motor right up to it without the wind pushing you over it.

Next I bait my rods, staggering them at the depth I see the fish. If the fish are up high, above 10 feet, I use a balloon and live shad on two rods. The other four rods will have half live and half cut shad, which I will suspend over the fish,

#BREAK# In the warmer months the bite will usually occur on live shad. The colder the water, the better that cut bait seems to work.

Keep moving the depth of your baits up and down according to what your locator is telling you. An easy way to determine the depth of your bait is to measure the distance between the first guide and your rods reel. My rods are two feet from reel to the first guide so whe

#BREAK# Stagger the depth of your bait so that you know how deep each is. When you get your first strike, move your other rods to that depth. If no strikes occur within 30 minutes move to another structure. I have set on the same ledge for many hours and caught fish, but I will usually have to move after catching 5 to 10 active fish. If you do not have a trolling motor you can use anchors, but it requires many sessions of heavin

#BREAK# When water is at its coldest, the anchor method will work better due to the inactivity of the fish below.

In other words, the warmer the water the faster the fish will spook out from under your boat. The colder the water the less chance the fish will want to move away due to their comfort zone in the water column.

#BREAK# Lets start by explaining how drifting works. Its really pretty simple: you cast out bait and drag it behind or from the side of your boat while the wind pushes you along.

Where to Fish

The majority of Cat-men that I know all use the same rig, although their tackle will differ from one guy to the next. Whatever tackle they use, they are all dragging some kind of bait on the bottom. T

#BREAK#

The shallow waters of most lakes contain a few big fish and lots of little ones resulting in lots of action, but not too many that will test your string. I have said before that Blue Cats can and will live and feed in deep water. My best day of drifting, as far as numbers of fish weighing between 3-20 lbs. goes, occurred last December. In one drift I caught and released 47 Blue Cats. These fish all came off of a huge flat that runs parallel to the main river channel with an average depth of 45 f

#BREAK# Its surface has a few small humps and a couple of old ditches running across it. People drive by me and look in disbelief when they see me drifting in 30 to 50 ft of water, but when that fish locator shows big fish marks on the bottom at those kind of depths I have a pretty good idea of whats down there.

Not all lakes are as easy to drift: some have gobs of timber and some have tons of rock on the bottom. The best lakes I have found have had some silting or massive mud flats that were old fields at one t

#BREAK# Simple structures like old ditches that carve across mud flats give Blue Cats a place to ambush their prey and might give them a little relief in the water column when the water is at its coldest or warmest. Look at these flats from different angles and ask yourself, How does the bank look? Could the surface under the water look similar to the structures above the water? Chances are that it will be pretty close.

These ideas are not really new. Bass and Walleye fishermen all over the U.S. use land structures to locate their fish and when it comes to locating these structures, fish locators are very valuable tools. My opinion is that you get what you pay for with electronics, but if you can find shad or baitfish with your locator a

#BREAK#

Catchin the Big Cats

The speed of your drift makes a huge difference. A good rule to follow is the colder the water, the slower you should go. A big Blue Cat will not want to chase bait thats traveling fast in cold water, so when you are dragging bait on the bottom you should use some kind of drift sock or sea anchor. You might have to experiment with different si

#BREAK# Manufacturers of drift socks will usually give you an estimate of the size of sock compared to the size of the boat you are using.

Furthermore, just because you are a Cat-fisherman, it doesnt mean you cant use the tools other fishermen use. Experiment with different hooks, weights, line, rods and reels, but my advice would be to eventually work your way into having an exactly matched set of at least 4 rods and reels. When you learn what works for you, you will be much happier with a matching set of gear. Having your gear match might not sound like much, but when you start catching Blue Cats over 20 lbs youll know the limitations of your tackle. Furthermor

#BREAK# Second and third place were the spinnerbait and then the crank bait.

Did you know that the Evening Secret ( #BREAK# com/specialsecret/4_Fly_Fishing_Tips.php" target=new>http://www.eveningsecretfishing.com/specialsecret/4_Fly_Fishing_Tips.php) is THE most effective technique for swarming fish to your fishing spot? We use it all the time with EXCELLENT and CONSISTANT results.

Picking one of these 3 is not enough, however. You must take into account the lake you are fishing on before you select your lure. Especially you must consider if it is better to cover a smaller segment of water thoroughly or skim across a larger expanse as quickly as possible to find fish. Using a worm is slower, but extremely effective and is very seductive to Bass. They do best when the fish are schooled over a particular structure.

Spinnerbait can be mov

#BREAK# It is a great probing lure for the shoreline because of its tangle-free construction.

Crankbaits cover a lot of water in a hurry. Using them, you can check out a spot without wasting too much time. You can use them for locating fish that may be scattered.

#BREAK# Drop that lure right in front of them. Scientists have proven that Bass calculate the amount of energy it will take them to go after the prey vs. the return.

Learn to fish all 3 of these lures effectively, and you will catch more than your share of big game Bass!

The first excellent lure to use is a plug that looks like a mouse very productive. Also use a big spent-wing moth made out of deer hair. Body and wings should be about the size of your forefinger. The idea is to twitch it along as if it is injured and trying to get in the air. Other surface plugs that chug, waddle, or have spinners are usually productive as well as buzzing lures that squeak. The most effective is a slim-minnow lure (a floating diving type). It resembles an

Water Quality Considerations

You need to fish bass differently in different kinds of water quality. Follow the general guidelines below to get better results.

Muddy Water: In low-visibility water, a bass finds food using its sonar senses. You must use lures with the best vibration and noise. You can tell if a lure has a high vibration by feeling the shaking of your rod as you bring in the lure. Use your heaviest vibrators and keep them coming at a st

#BREAK#

Clear Water: Bass are overly cautious in clear water with high visibility. Their survival instincts kick in, and they are wary of anything out of the ordinary. Use lighter lines that are less visible. Also, use longer casts and lures that resemble bass food in the area. Spinners usually work in clear water, but if they are not working try a black spinner blade to reduce the flash.

Normal Water: This water has normal algae and plankton that filters out sunlight. It is ideal for all types of lures, as the bass are not timid. Use the shotgun approach here and set up 3 outfits, one using a surface lure, one using a deep diver, and the last using a plastic worm. Do about 10 casts wi

#BREAK# This is a great way to find out what is working.

Fishing a Plastic Worm

Here are some techniques that you should consider for fishing plastic worms for bass in different situations:

Turbid water - bass are sight and sound feeders, and it is important to add turbulence to the plastic worm. Add a No. 3 Hildebrandt gold spinner just ahead of the hook. This sets up a flashing, hissing, throbbing attraction that bass can hear at considerable distances.

Clear water

#BREAK#

Big vibe worms Use a worm with a curly tail design that gives off extremely strong vibrations. Try these worms when your straight worms fail to score.

Skipping This is the only method to get under overhanging branches. You need a spin casting or spinning rig because a level wind reel just doesnt ski8p well. Make a flat hard cast onto the waters surface so that it will make a low skip. This will reach bass hangouts impossible to attain in any other way.

Ripping This wil

#BREAK# Let the worm settle to the bottom and lie there for about 20 seconds. Reel slack out of the line and pick up the worm with a long, sharp upsweep of the rod tip. Let it settle to the bottom under tension as you slowly lower the rod tip. Repeat for three or four rips. Strikes will come.

Drift trolling move to the head of a dee

#BREAK# Raise and lower the worm as it contacts bottom. Pickups usually happen as the worm is being pulled off the cover.

Flyrodding Fill a single action flyreel with backing and about 50 yards of 10-pound monofilament. Rig a six-inch worm weedless and add a small split-shot ahead of the hook so it will sink slowly. Either flip or flat-cast the worm into every pocket you see and feed it line as it slowly settles to bottom. Keep the flyrod tip low so that you can make a long, sweeping strike when you feel a bass inhale the worm.

#BREAK#

Worm rig

One of the biggest problems with fishing a worm is the inability to sense strikes. Usually the inability to sense them is due to a sinker that is too heavy and a line that is too thick.

Use a variable buoyancy worm using lead strip sinkers. Here are some advantages:

  • No moving lead on the line to dampen the feel of a gentle pickup

  • You can apply the precise amount of lead to deliver the worm action needed

  • It makes it easier for a bass to inhale the worm

  • It aids in hook setting

  • Its easier to shake loose from snags

  • You can cause the worm to hang virtually suspended over the

    #BREAK#

To tell how much lead strip is needed, wrap one strip around the hook and bury the barb in the worm. Ease it into the water and watch it sink, it should barely settle toward the bottom. If it sinks to fast, take some off, etc. A slow decent is the ticket here.

Make sure to use no heavier than 8-pound mono line preferably 6 pound.

Weather Matters

In the early spring and fall bass will smash top

#BREAK# They are also likely to take surface lures when found in shallow water, such as along shorelines near overhanging trees.

As the temperature rises and the bass are in the cooler, deeper holes, change your technique. You need something to dredge the bottom. The plastic worm is ideal for this, even the most sluggish bass will respond wh

#BREAK#

Crank baits

When fishing a tidal river for bass, cast crank baits near the mouths of tiny feeder streams on the falling tide. Bass hang out where the water depth drops off, waiting for crayfish, crabs and minnows to be washed out.

Bait

One of the best baits for small mouth bass in rivers is the hellgrammite, the larva of the Dobson fly. Gather these from beneath rocks in shallow riffles with a mesh net

#BREAK# Fish them on No. 4 or 6 fine-wire hooks, drifting them naturally through pools and runs below rapids.

A Trick Most Bass Fishermen Dont Know

First and foremost, most bass fishermen are not aware of The Evening Secret which is a special device that will bring feeding fish swarming to your location on the water. It works like a charm.

Cast a worm over a limber branch and reel it back so that its tail just touches the water. Then jiggle the rod tip, making the worm squirm and wriggle just above the surface. Bass will often leap right out of the water to snatch it.

Night Fishing

Many anglers h

#BREAK# Although it is true that bass cannot see well at night, but they have an amazing ability to pick up disturbances on the water and hone in on unsuspecting bait. Given this, lures that vibrate will cause the most underwater disturbance and are most effective. You can also drill a small hole in balsa or plastic lures to place small BBs in them to make some noise.

#BREAK# Another reason they are popular is because they go for a variety of natural bait and artificial bait. They usually opt for areas with clear water and reasonable weed growth.

** Quick Tip: No matter what kind of fish you go for, and no matter what conditions you fish (ice fishing included), the 1947 Evening Secret" ( #BREAK# com/specialsecret/BlueGills_Trout_Walleyes.php" target=new>http://www.eveningsecretfishing.com/specialsecret/BlueGills_Trout_Walleyes.php) will bring the fish to you, it really is an impressive tool that every fisherman worth his salt should own.

Typically they like water from 50 degrees up to 90, and can even be taken through ice! But, the best time to get them is when the water is around 70 degrees. It is then

#BREAK# You can find nests from about 2 12 feet deep.

When it is warmer, fish early and/or late in the day, especially if you are in shallow water. Bigger bluegills can be found in deeper water, and can be up to 20 feet below the surface. When fishing lily pads, approach it as if you were going for bass. Work the points, pockets and indentations where there is open water.

Make sure to fish with small hooks and bait. They have small mouths and have a hard time taking in larger bait.

Great baits to use are pieces of earthworm, crickets, grasshoppers, grubs, wax worms, minnows, leeches, and even sandwich meat

#BREAK# If you go the artificial route, use tiny jigs and spinner baits.

There isnt really a need to use more than 2-pound test line maybe up to 4-pound maximum. As you may know, light lines make the bait appear more lifelike.

They are easily spooked so make longer casts if you are on foot, stay a bit back from the shore. If you are in a boat, be careful and quiet.

After you get a strike, dont act too quickly. Wait a second before lifting the rod you will hook more this way.

Walleyes, Use Waders At Night

It is fairly well known that Walleyes favor low-light conditions. They can be found in water only 3-4 feet deep looking for perch. Using a pair of waders you can go for them.

Some

#BREAK#

You can find them at points where deep water is near. Scout for baitfish feeding on plankton sooner or later the Walleyes will show up.

Trout, Midges

If your luck is not good with early season trout, try a few patterns of midges. Mosquito larva or pupa, in sizes 12-20 is good. If it is early in the season, fish it deep.

Catfish, Bait

Follow these steps to make a bait catfish just cant resist:

To bait up, pinch some dough and set it on your hook catfish will go crazy for this mixture!

#BREAK# The problem is, reels have gotten so well-made, so functional, that you almost have to know what you are looking for. In the old days, reels held the line, your spare hand was the drag, and that was it. Tippets almost always broke when fighting an unusually large trout, and the rare one you did haul in was a great cause for celebration.

Well things are different today. Drag systems have changed, there are retrieve ratios (always buy 1:1 for trout), and e

#BREAK# As is the nature of all information posted on the Big Y Fly Co. web site, we are here to try to simplify the whole thing.

Fly Reels Function

First, lets start off with the function of the reel. Well the first thing a fly reel was ever designed to do, was to hold the line. Keep it in a nice, convenient, compact location, where we can strip it out as we need. Then we wanted the reel to reel in the line preferably with a fish on, but also without. Guess what, almost every fly reel out there will do these things to satisfaction. The ultra cheap models, have lots of imperfections tha

#BREAK# The ultra cheap models will also in no time cease to work altogether, forcing you to pony up more dough and thereby negating the only advantage the ultra cheap model had to begin with. In short, stay away from the ultra cheap models.

Fly Reel Drag

After the original function of the fly reel has been satisfied, the next thing to look at is drag. The drag is the fly reels

#BREAK# A good drag will do just that, provide even tension the whole time. There are two types of drag out there, spring and pawl, and disc drag. Fly reel companies all over have been bragging about the disc drag, it works like the disc braking system in a car. The disc drag system is THE system of choice for large game fish, from large trout on up. But I frankly prefer the spring and pawl syst

#BREAK# Less likely to snap off a 6x tippet when the hooked trout makes a sudden change of direction. So in my humble opinion, if fishing a 5 wt or lighter, dont forget about the good old spring and pawl. Although it is getting harder to find in a quality reel, it is still out there.

Fly Reel Size and other Considerations

This used to be fairly automatic. Match the weight of the rod with the reel, and the line. This is still true today. Although many manufacturers now tout the weigh

#BREAK# I am skeptical that a couple of ounces of weight from the fly reel will make that much difference to your fatigue factor. Although I do agree, that the feel should be correct, and if possible try out your fly reel on your rod before purchasing. Or if you purchase the reel from the same manufacturer as your rod, they should be counter balance each other, and the feel should be perfect.

Another size consideration is arbor size. Even on trout reel 5 wt. or less, large arbor reels are available. Large arbor reels store the line in la

#BREAK# They also increase drag consistency, since the spool isnt spinning as often, a very nice benefit when using the disc drag reel. And the retrieve rate is faster than standard reels as well.

One last consideration is ease of spool changes, most moderate to expensive fly reels now all are easy to swit

#BREAK# But it doesnt hurt to try it out before purchasing, and also check to see how much spare spools are, while youre at it.

Summary

Fly reels, like all aspects of fly fishing has come along way, in functionality, specialization, and price. Although due to improved manufacturing techniques, it is still possible to get a decent fly reel for about 100 bucks. You also can spend a small fortune, to decorate your fly fishing ensemble as well. As for brands, I recommend sticking to the major names, and review the warra

#BREAK# The bigger names will be around, and the extra spools will be available for many years to come. Dont forget craftsmanship, Cabelas for one, puts its name on some reels that really dont pass the muster. Although their mid-range reels are some of my favorites. I have liked every Orvis reel I ever fished, and there are many other names out there to choose from. All things being equal choose the one whose feel you like the best. Then you should be happy with your purchase for years to come.

#BREAK# Nothing can spook fish quicker than an oversized tippet for the particular situation. On the other hand, and undersized tippet can result in the fly fisher losing their trophy before they even get a photo opportunity. We will start at the very basic of leader and tippet selection and then get more specific, and hopefully conclude with enoug

#BREAK#

What is leader and tippet

Leader and tippet is the final connection between the fly fisher and their fly. It is the section of line after the fly line and before the fly. Its purpose is to transfer energy from the fly line down to the fly, allow for natural presentation of the fly, and then be strong enough for the fly fisher to retrieve any fish that might strike at the naturally presented fly. Sounds simple enough, but this is fly fishing, and fly fishers have been around a long time. And as a group we seem to think about everything related to our sport a lot, and therefore probably have over complicated things a

#BREAK#

The leader in fly fishing is tapered. It is thicker at the butt section, then at the tippet section. It is usually divided into three sections, the butt is tied directly to the fly line, and is the longest portion of the leader, about 60%. The mid-section is next and its purpose is to taper down to the tippet without losing a lot of strength. The final section is the tippet, it is the actual section that is tied to the fly. It is the thinnest section, it needs to be strong, yet allow for a natural drift, without alarming t

#BREAK#

Commercial leaders by and large achieve all this in one smooth product. Although there are still knotted leaders out there, by and large knotless leaders are the choice. It is possible to construct you own leaders and many people do. But that is the topic of another article. A fly fisher does, however need to know how to attach new tippet portion to the fly line, I prefer the double surgeons knot, but the blood knot is also popular. Learn how to tie these knots bef

#BREAK#

X factor

Now comes the fun part. A new set of numbers to learn. Different numbers then choosing flies or fly rods. Fly fishing is overwrought with numbering systems, and unfortunately leaders and tippets you are just going to need to learn. They are sized on the X numbering system. So when you hear someone say they are switching to a 6X, you now know they are talking about their tippet. X measures the diameter of the leader minus .011. So a 6X would measure .005. A 0X would actually measure .011. One really only needs to remember the HIGER the X, the smaller the diameter. The other number worth noting the test, or breakin

#BREAK# This is worth noting, and many a trophy are lost when violating that #.

There are many variable to consider when selecting the right X, but the two most common are the size of fish you are going after, and the size of fly you are using when going after them. A quick guide is as follows:

X Fly

0 2-6

1 4-8

2 4-10

3 6-12

4 6-14

5 12-16

6 16-20

7 20-24

8 24 and smaller

Length

One must also think about the length of the leader itself. Leaders are sold these days anywhere from 4 feet to 15 feet. There are many things t

#BREAK# Other variable are static like size of fish, current, etc.

Typically the easier it is to spook a fish, the longer the leader you will need to use. So

The industry seems to have settled on 91/2 feet as a good all-around length. For everything from trout to steelhead to tarpon. It is a good length to handle for all levels of fly casters, and it gives enough distance between the splash down of the fly line and the fly as to not spook most fish under most circumstances.

From this standard we can then begin to think of reasons we might need to adjust.

#BREAK# Whereas sinking tip lines used in spring run off will use as leaders as short as 4 feet. A weed choked largemouth bass pond will require a shorter, stouter leader, and therefore you will be able to muscle your fish away from snags. But a trout caught in a spring creek will have the advantage because your leader will easily break off due to its lightness. Windy days might require one to shorten up a bit to ease in casting. When switching from nymphing to dry flies one might need to lengthen a bit.

Summary

I hope this has clarified and not complicated things a bit. What all this means is one must carry a good assortment of tapered leaders and even more i

#BREAK# There are many times I switch sizes in the same day. If I am fighting fish deep in faster current during the day, I might go down one X factor, and then in the evening if I am dry fly fishing in shallow slow water, Ill go up two X factors.

Not having the correct tippet can handicap ones ability to land fish, either by breaking off if too small, or sp

#BREAK# It is a nominal expense compared to the rest of your equipment, and a bad place to start watching that fly fishing budget. So make sure youre well stocked for every imaginable situation before you hit the water. I guarantee you at some point you will be glad you are.

Yes! I did say French Fries

#BREAK# I did read posting from a guy that caught a large Flathead on fries by one of the restaurants on the river in Newport Ky. Any fast food place that sells fries works. If possible pick some up when heading to your spot so they are on the warm side. That allows the grease to get into the water to make a scent trail easier.

If you have a friend that works in a restaurant that has steak, ask them to make up doggie bag of scraps for you. It stays on the hook very well when casting and the fish have a hard time just pecking it off the hook. All of those eight fish were hooked, none s

#BREAK# So I was able to released them to grow bigger for the next season.

This past summer I was able to use a casting net to get some gizzard and thinfin shad for bait. These fish die very quickly. So I just cut them up for bait. Skipjack is a great bait if you can get them. Around Cincinnati they can be caught on a rod and reel in the Fall. Other than that the only place I know for skipjack year round is the power plant at Aberdeen Ohio. I have some frozen cut skipjack from last Fall to start off this season.

#BREAK# The other week I saw him actually catch a 5 lb. channel cat out of the river using chicken nuggets. He turn to me and said that was the smallest one of the day. He had landed 5 other cats earlier that morning and released them. HE had stopped at McDonalds and picked up a 6 nugget serving that morning. He said he has used other companies nuggets in the past.

I hope you get a chance to try out some of these baits this season. Tight lines and plenty of action to all!

The second tip is to never head into the wilderness alone. Just as one should never go swimming without a swimming buddy, nor should one go long-distance cycling or hiking, nor hunting, camping or fishing in a remote area without a buddy.

Not only that, with a cell phone you can even catch up on your email while crouching in your tent or scaling a cliff, with an email to phone service.

"Hi there, Big Bear, do you read me? Can you get a-hold of my wife to see if I have to pick up milk and peanut butter on my way back into town? Do you copy?"

Before you leave on any outdoors trip, it is wise to check the weather forecast. But the weather forecast can change quickly, so a cell phone or radio serves another purpose.

"Whaddaya mean thunderstorms and hail?!? I just got here, darling, I dont want to come home

Of course, you could just have someone email the weather forecast to you on your cell phone.

Chad Brown also advises keeping a very loud whistle hanging from your neck. If you are trapped under a tree, pinned down by a boulder, or wrestling a grizzly bear, you might not have reach or the attention span to dial a number. If anybody is within earshot, they will come running...if not to help you, at least to capture it for "Americas Funniest Home Videos".

Our final tip might seem obvious, but make sure you know where to call. Have the emergency number taped to the back

#BREAK#

There you have it. You are prepared to go out into the wild and communicate. And if the animals dont understand what you are trying to communicate to them, you might not be any worse off than in the city.

#BREAK# Every fly fisher knows that or ought to know that. Like humans, the retina of a fish have rods and cones. Cones are used in the day and rods at night. Color vision evolved to help fish identify potential food. In the environment of the fish, the background will either be the bottom, the water itself, or if looking up for food it could be the sky. The bottom is normally tannish olive to green. When looking across the water, the background appears pale silver blue. But if the water is off color due to algae or high water one must take that into consideration as well. Skylight becomes more important at dusk and dawn when it

Thus for opportunistically feeding game fish, flies with bright or contrasting colors and/or a lot of flash will make them stand out against the above mentioned backgrounds. The Mickey Finn, tied with yellow and red, and a silver body is one of the most effective attractor patterns. As for dry fly attractors , the Royal Wulff is still hard to beat, with its red and peacock body and white wings. Black flies, because of their strong silhouette also are easy for fish to spot. Lets not forget patterns that contain strands of flashabou or other tinsel that reflect light when stripped or while drifting through the current are easy for fish to spot.

#BREAK# Water is denser, and the colors are diffused quicker. Cloudy days where there is less overall light will offer less visibility, and colors will disappear quicker in the depths of the water. And the clarity of water obviously greatly effects this as well. This is important in fly selection because certain colors travel farther in low light than others. Red is the first color to disappear, usually at about 15 feet in clear water, followed by orange and then yellow. Blues and greens are visible to the fish as long as there is light. Yet silver and white will be brighter.

Why this seems to work is somewhat a mystery. It is understood that fish see deeper into the ultraviolet range than humans, so perhaps they are just seeing something we dont. It could also be due to the effect water has on colors. Perhaps well never know, but like many things in fishing, why something works is not as important

Jig Weights

Jigs are one of the most versatile game-fish catchers in either fresh or saltwater. It is so important to have the right weight jig for your line weight. If the jig is too heavy for the line, you will loose your jig far too eas

#BREAK# If the jig is too light for the line, its swimming pattern will be disrupted and it wont be ass effective. This simple chart will help you select the correct jig:

Line Strength Jig Size

6-lb. Test 1/8 to oz.

8-lb. Test to 3/8 oz.

10-lb. Test to oz.

14 to 20-lb. Test 5/8 to o

#BREAK# Chang the split ring too because it is subject to stress and rust. Use a stainless-steel split ring for strength. They do not spread or rust as to most of those that come wit h the plugs. Dont, however, use stainless steel hooks they are more easily bent out of shap

#BREAK# Also, if a fish gets away with your plug, stainless steel will not rust out, as a plain steel hook will. Lastly, get some split-ring pliers they make changing your hooks easy.

Extra Springs

If you use a spinning reel, you have probably had a spring break when the fishing gets really hot. Always carry extras (use a 35mm-film canister) and make sure to have a little screwdriver along as well. Practice changing it before you go out

No-slip Soles

If your winter boot soles are worn, just cut the liner to match the sole of an old sneake

#BREAK# Fasten the felt to the sneaker sole with a non-soluble glue. Please a heavy object on top of the sneaker overnight, and by morning you have an all purpose non-slip shoe.

Snag-proof Spinners

Treble hooks are oftentimes trouble when using spinners, causing snags. Make them snag-free by removing the treble hook and replace with a single hook. Next thread on a three to four inch twister-tail grub and Texas-rig it.

Downriggers

Need to drop your bait down deep? Fish are very uncooperative creatures, and dont always hang out near the surface. If your depth sounder i

#BREAK#

If you arent exactly sure what it is, it is simple. It is a spool holding between 200-600 feet of steel cable. There is a weight attached that is between 6-12 pounds. Additionally there is a quick-release line gripper, just like a clothespin.

The fishing lines from your rods are attached to the quick-release mechanisms. Then the entire thing is dropped down to t

#BREAK# The bait is far enough from the weight and line gripper not to spook the fish. If you get a bite, the line is released from the gripper, so it is just you and the fish!

Some downriggers have fish-attractant properties (either electrical, or a special kind of paint), but not most of them.

Downriggers work great for deep trolling, and some even have an electronic crank that will bring everything up. If you need to get at deeper schools of fish, these are highly recommended.

Nail Polish Helps

#BREAK# Carry a bottle with you when you are fishing, and give it a shot.

Ferrules

If there is dirt on your ferrule it can contribute to rapid wear. Make a plug out of wood to help keep the female ferrule clean.

Is your ferrule stuck? Use Liquid Wrench, which you can get at any auto-parts store. Just spray it around the

#BREAK# In a few minutes you will be able to pull it apart.

Getting Out Line Tangles

Use a pair of large fabric needles to work out these tangles. They have a smooth finish which wont damage the line as you work the mess out. They are also handy to sew canvas tarp, leather, or carpet strips.

Pocket Tackle box

Att

#BREAK# Just drill an undersized hole near the back of the box and insert a small eye-screw. A know will stop the cord from slipping through the eye. Just put a clip on the other end so that you can secure the rope to a belt loop or buttonhole.

Avoiding Line Twist

Line twist is the leading cause of fouled fishing. To check for it, pull off enough line to span your outstretched hands about 6 feet. Next, bring your hands together in front of you, causing the line to drop into a loop. If the loop wraps aroun

#BREAK# Remove it by trolling about 100 feet of line behind a boat. Next install a ball-bearing swivel to prevent future line twist.

Knots Are Key

One of the most important things in losing or landing a hooked fish is your knot. Be certain the knot you are tying is strong and properly tied.

To make sure, tie your usual knot and test it against other knots. A good test is to take two four-inch sections of a broom h

#BREAK# Tie a knot in each screw eye and pull steadily until you see which knot survives. Do it 10 times to get an average. The knot that holds best should be your new knot.

Anchor Pulley, Keep it Quiet

If you use an anchor pulley, you risk spooking the fish as most pulleys eventually start to squeak. Try this alternative to a pulley:

Get a large U-bolt, a few nuts and washers, and an old-style glass or porcelain fencepost insulator.

Slip the insulator on a U-bolt, drill a couple of holes to accommodate the bolt, and tighten it to the mounting surface. The anchor rope will slide freely in the insulators groove, and the anchor lowers and raises as effortlessly as with a pulle

#BREAK#

Casting Poppers

Casting poppers with a fly rod is awkward. To get better distance bore a slightly undersized small hole in the popper, just big enough to fit a BB in. It should fit snugly and will give you another 30 feet of casting distance at least.

Cheap and easy depth finder

Using two felt-tipped markers (red and black) mark an anchor rope as follows: A single red mark around the rope at five feet, a red and black mark at 10 feet, a single red mark at 15 feet, two black marks at 20 feet, a single red and two black marks at 25 feet and three black marks at 30. Use the color code red for every five feet and multiples of black for 10 feet.

Netting baitfish

#BREAK# Just turn the wire handle down 90 degrees, then push the net back on line. The forward-positioned net makes it much easier to trap a baitfish against the inside of an open-top bucket.

A Cheap Anchor For A Fishing Boat

For holding a good-sized boat over a rocky bottom, use a large swivel snap to fasten four fee of heavy chain to a standard mushroom anchor. You can get one from a junkyard. The chain boosts the anchors weight and holding power, provides convenient handles for lowering and raisi

Population numbers of bluefish have been documented to follow cycles lasting about forty years. A recent disappearance occurred during the 1920s, and anglers are still enjoying a high for the fish which began in the 1970s. Casting into a school of fish requires the use of moderately heavy tackle and wire leaders. It is important that black wire leaders and swivels are used, as the fish will often strike shiny leaders, weakening and in some cases severing them. Feeding bluefish have been known to even attack each other; it is not uncommon for a four-pounder on the line to be cut in half by a twenty pound blue.

Bluefish can also be caught from the surf at certain times of the year. Shiny spoons such as the Hopkins brand are consistent favorites for fishing in surf due to their visibility and enticing action.

Anglers that use live or cut bait, such as eels or fish, often catch blues from the surf or from piers simply by letting the bait sit and waiting for a s

Flyfishing for blues has become more and more popular in recent years. Many of the same techniques and lures used for striped bass can be applied to bluefish. Bluefish of course require an extra-strong leader and mostly strikes larger flies which closely resemble the most popular regional baitfish.

Fly anglers often catch blues incidentally while fishing for stripers, but some fly and light tackle anglers target blues specifically, especially when stripers are absent.

He explained, as he opened a cooler, that in shark fishing it is good to have more than one bait but that he was so skilled that he only needed one. Upon opening the cooler the fella removed a Spanish Mackrel that easily weighed 4lbs. I said "...thats a nice spanish, are you going to grill it or fry it?" He replied "Its my bait". "The whole thing?", "Yep".

Things were definately starting to come together now. Ive heard of using big bait to catch big fish but this was a little extreme. Then I saw a way for us t

#BREAK# I offered him the Spanish Mackrel that we had caught earlier in the day. He instantly replied "What do I have to do for them?" "Teach us how to do what youre doing"

We were in!! The guy lightened up and said at least he would have some company on the desolate peir. With extra bait the guy instantly began rigging up the behemouth pole. He withdrew a steel cable le

#BREAK# He began explaining in detail the ins and outs of shark fishing. "..the leader has to be at least 15 feet long or longer, I like mine at least 20, and you cant get this stuff at a bait store, you have to go to the hardware store..." I questioned him about the hook and swivel, he replied that they were purchased from a local tackle shop at $2-4ea. I was quickly realizing that shark fishing could get expensive quick. H

#BREAK# " In disbelief I asked "Do you really need a reel as big as yours?" he replied "If you want to catch big fish you have to have big tackle". His reel was a 14/0 Penn Senator and looked as if it would hold 5 miles of the braided 80lb test line that it was spooled with.

I suddenly was stumped. How was this guy going to cast a 20 steel leader with a 4lb spanish mackrel hooked to the end of it? My question would be answered by means of kayak. The guy removed a kayak from his truck and began to paddle toward the end

#BREAK# Upon arriving at the end directly beneath us he instructed for us to "carefully" lower the spanish mackrel with a gaff-sized hook in it into his lap. We did as we were told and the guy was off paddling in a flash.

Ok, here is the situation: This crazy guy is paddling in a kayak toward the middle of the ocean, in shark infested waters with a 4lb spanish mackrel laying in his lap. At this point I began to question the guys sanity.

Paddling the bait out took no more than 5mins and very quickly the guy took his seat next to his reel. After fooling with the reel for a while, checking drag, engaging a clicker and securing the reel to the pier with a rope he sat back and opened a cold beer and said "Now we wait

#BREAK# " "How long?" I replied. "As long as it takes." he firmly stated.

After several long boring hours of catching catfish and an ocassional foot long shark I was beginning to grow tired of waiting. Could Shark Fishing really be worth all this effort and time? Not even a single bite on the big pole. Then I heard the sweetest most spine tingling sound that a fisherman could possibly hear. Drag! And lots of it, More than I had ever heard before. The massive reel was producing the loudest most chilling sound that I c

#BREAK# Line was being stripped off at a phenominal rate and the guy was just sitting there watching it. What was he doing? Obviously the Shark had the bait why wasnt he setting the hook?

He slowly began strapping himself into what appeared to be a fish fighting harness. Calmly picked up the reel and strapped it in the butt holder and clipped straps from his shoulders to the reel. I realized that this guy was strapping himself directly to the reel! If something went wrong he would not be able to just let go of the reel, he was truly one with the reel.

With line stripping off as if it were tied to the bumper of a Porshe the guy engaged the reel and the demeanor on his face changed instantly. Wi

#BREAK# When he reached the end of his walkway he would reel down on the fish and almost jog back to the edge of the pier. This process was repeated two or three times. Then the fight began!

For the first hour it appeard that he was going to almost be able to reel the fish directly in. Kinda like cranking in a boat with a wench. Boy was I wrong. Seemingly the Shark was just swimming toward the pier and did not know that he was ev

#BREAK# When it appeared that the shark was getting close he turned and headed out to sea. He ran and stripped drag for what seemed like an eternity. After a couple of hours fighting the guy (while still fighting the fish) a

#BREAK# What? This guy wants to drink water while he is fighting this monster fish? He explained that in the course of fighting a big fish it was very important to remain hydrated. I asked how long the fight usually took. And he replied that the fight time varies greatly from one fish to another, some lasting only an hour and some lasting 12-14 hours.

The battle was one of constant give and take he would reel in 100 yards and the shark would take 200. An hour rolled into two, two to three, un

#BREAK# Soon we were awakened to what time it was as the sun began to creep up from the dark abyss in the east. This guy had been fighting this fish from a little after sunset until sunrise with no vast improvement in line on the reel. My realization of the addictiveness of shark fishing came when the guy stated "... I hope this fish comes on in I have to be at work by 10:00am..." This guy had stayed up all night fig

#BREAK# That is true Dedication and love for a sport.

It was about 8:30am when we got our first glimpse of the shark. The guy said it looked like a Bull Shark and was probably around 12 feet long. It looked more like 20 to me. As the shark began to tire the question came to me "What are you going to do now?" I asked and he replied "What do you mean what am I going to do now, Im gonna land this fish take

#BREAK# .." Sounded like a good idea to me but we were 20 off the water on the pier there was no possible way to hoist the thousand pound fish up onto the pier. Then everything began to come clear. The guy was making his way down the pier toward the beach. When he reached the end of the pier he made his way down to the beach. Us not far behind. The guy worked the shark past the first sandbar and up into the shallow waist deep water at the breakers. When the Shark appeared to have run out of energy the guy disengaged his reel and handed it to me. "If he starts running just hold on to the reel." The guy removed a

#BREAK# With a loop in one end of the rope he grapped the sharks tail and secured the loop around it. With a grunt he began to drag the massive fish up onto the beach. With half the fish in the water and half out he removed a waterproof disposable camera from his pocket and handed it to me. "Take the whole roll with me and the shark." I started snapping pictures and soon the roll was gone. I turned around and to my amazement we had drawn a huge crowd of people. Onlookers, tourist, kids, old people, even a few bea

      #BREAK#

With the film in the camera gone the guy measured the shark, untied the tail rope and walked the shark out to deeper water. He stayed with the shark long enough for it to regain its strength and let it go. The defeated creature slowly slumbered out past the first sandbar and onto the second. I was truly in disbelief. This guy had fought this fish all night with his own blood sweat and probably some tears only to let it go.

#BREAK# I do it for the fun of it. I catch fish people only dream about and I let them go so I can catch them again." It was then that my outlook on fishing was changed forever. It is not about what you take home for the table, its what you take home for yourself. Dont get me wrong I love fish and I h

Then I realized something: It was all worth it, the reel, the rod, the bait, the hooks, line, money and time. It was all woth it.

Five months later after saving every paycheck from my summer job I ordered my first shark fishing reel a 16/0 Penn Senator for $300 from Bass Pro Shops. I also ordered line, 3000 yard of Braided 80lb test $250 and a rod to put it all on $120. Ever since that night on the Pensacola Pier I have a new addiction in my life Shark Fish

I usually rent a kayak from the local Beach Supply Store and we usually camp or rent a hotel. The bait is hard to find and expensive. I have found the best places to find fresh fish is at a fish market and usually Asian fish markets have a much wider selection to choose from. My most successful baits are as follows: King Mackrel, Spanish Mackrel, Jack Crevelle, Bonito and lastly Mullet.

If you have ever had the privilege of hooking up on a big tarpon then you know the exhilaration and thrill of testing yourself in battle against one of the most sought after gamefish in the world. This distinction is easy to see at first glance as the tarpon starts a series of spectacular acrobatic leaps in the air that will have your heart pounding, your rod bending and your drag screaming. You better hold on!

#BREAK# Tarpon can be caught while using many types of tackle, rods, baits, lures and rigs either while fishing from a boat, canoe, kayak or walking and wading from the shoreline as the tarpon work up and down the beaches.

While only microscopic at birth, tarpon have been documented at lengths of more than eight feet and weighing 280 pounds. Catches weighing more than 200 pounds, while uncommon, do occur. Many fish caught are well over 100 pounds. Their growth rate is slow, tak

#BREAK# Tarpon can live 55 to 60 years. They are greenish or bluish on top, and silver on the sides. The large mouth is turned upwards and the lower jaw contains an elongated bony plate. The last ray of the dorsal fin is much longer than the others, reaching nearly to the tail.

They are found primarily in shallow coastal waters and estuaries, but they are also found in open marine wat

Florida is widely regarded as having many of the best tarpon fishing locations in the world, especially the world-renowned Boca Grande Pass in Southwest Florida.

#BREAK# There are still ultra purists who consider casting dry mayfly patterns upstream to rising trout the ONLY form of fly fishing. I wasnt brought up that way and find that way of thinking too limiting. For one thing it would severely limit my time on the water, and would force me to get rid of about three-fourths of my beloved fly fishing gear. However, I must admit, there is a certain timeless quality to casting classic dry flies upstream to rising trout. And if tha

But it doesnt stop there, there are several species that entomologists have identified. But we as fly fishers have simplified that and lumped all these into Light Hendrickson and Dark Hendrickson.

How the Hendrickson mayfly received its common name is a bit of fly fishing lore. As told by Roy Steenrod of Liberty, New York:

One day in 1916, while we were fishing the Beaverkill below the junction pool at Roscoe, a ha

I caught one of the flies and put it into my fly box, and after lunch that day at Ferdons I tied some patterns of the fly as nearly as I could. We took fish with fly day in and day out, and for years it proved to be a killer and is so today. One day, while sitting on the bank of the stream perhaps two years after I had tied the first patterns, the matter was brought up as to which I would call or name the fly. Looking at A.E., the best friend a person could ever wish to have, I said, the fly is the Hendrickson. I saw at once that A.E. was pleased.

However, the classic pattern described above is the Dark Hendrickson, that worked so well all those years ago. And stil

The Light Hendrickson pattern is commonly used for two other mayfly hatches. The Ephemerella invaria can also be called Pale evening Dun or Sulphur and is commonly mistaken with the Ephemerella dorithea. #BREAK# We covered the basics of the nymph stage of this crucial insect in the world of the freshwater game fish and fly fisherman. We now will cover the adult phases of the mayfly. Although most of its life is indeed spent as a nymph dwelling at the river or lake bottom. It is the adult insect that has truly captured the fancy of fly fisherman. Its the adults that were given the colorful names that we listed in the Mayfly Nymph article. And it is the adult that fly fishing elitists consider the only form worthy of imitation.

After spending a year or so as a nymph, the mayfly emerges to the s

#BREAK# On the way, it shucks its outer skin, and pumps fluids into its wings. This emerging stage has caught on in popularity in the fly fishing world, as the mayfly emerger is extremely vulnerable. Many mayfly species are clumsy swimmers at best, and combine that with shucking their outer nymph skin, they become a flailing treat for the waiting trout.

Upon emerging they need to dry their wings. There they sit on top of the water, with their sailboat wings upright. The mayfly cannot fold their wings down, which also lend to their visibility for the waiting trout. At this stage they are called duns. Usua

#BREAK# This is the stage where fly fisherman typically use dry flies to imitate the mayfly. Although each individual insect is only in this stage for a short time, mayflies can emerge by the thousands with the hatches lasting for several hours at a time. It is joy of every fly angler to witness and participate in one of these hatches.

After drying their wings the mayflies fly to a nearby shrub, tree or bush. Not being very good fliers, their two or three tails, are thought to aid in stabilizing them, though to our eyes they

From our point of view it is hard to deny that the mayflys life is nothing but a gift to the wild trout. #BREAK# Their emergence is relatively quick do to the nature of water they ware found.

Swimmers like the Isonychias like pools, and slower runs and riffles. They are excellent swimmers and strikes for them ten dot be vicious. They can hatch heavy or sporadic.

Crawlers also prefer softer runs and riffles. These species such as the Hendricksons and Sulphurs have th

#BREAK# Therefore great fishing can be found drifting nymphs or emerger patterns just below the surface where fat fish love to slurp them up. Their hatches can be explosive and really send fish into a frenzy.

The burrowers like sandy or silt bottoms. They need the silt to burrow and survive. Their hatches tend to be legendary and very popular. These mayflies like the Drakes and Hexes, are large and infamous. However their hatches are very short-lived, and many people mark their calendars around them.

After the nymph stage comes the emerger stage, which we covered somewhat above. The emerger stage is relatively new are of concentration for the fly angler. But it has exploded in populari

For the novice fly fisher I hope this has given you a foundation for the appreciation you will sure grow to have of this class of insects. And for the ordained, now would be a good time to have your blood pressure checked. I will discuss the adult mayfly in a future article.

The family chalet was located on Crooked River in Naples Maine; it was situated approximately 3.5 miles above the Songo Locks in the middle of undiscovered paradise. The rivers water level was high and the current was moving quickly. It was a gorgeous summer afterno

#BREAK# With lots of shadows on the waters surface and a waterfront free of fishing competition, I pulled out my gear.

As I reached the forty foot waterfront, I saw that one of my brothers had left our 18 aluminum canoe unattended and it was not properly put away. It was nearly parallel to the shoreline. As I was baiting my hook, I yelled out for him, but got no response. With a stubborn attitude, I refused to perform the simple act of putting the canoe where it was supposed to be stored. After all, I would get in trouble for not taking care of the canoe when I was done with it. So I left the canoe untouched, hoping t

So I stood on the shoreline, behind the canoe, and started fishing. Initially, casting my line over the canoe did not bother me. As the afternoon evaporated, not only were my casts being ignored, but this unexplained sense of guilt came over me. My spirit was prodding my soul for not putting the canoe away. When a fisherman is not having success, he tends to become distracted and lose focus. For me that day, the sound of water lapping the side of the canoe

After 60-90 minutes without a bite, I was ready to find another activity. I needed to walk away when I got my one and only strike for the day. The whizzing of filament coming from my reel caught me by surprise - so much so, that I nearly dropped my fishing pole. Normally that unique sound was primarily associated with my siblings rod. Before that moment, I had never felt the true tug of a large fish. In an heightened sense of awareness, I frantically called for out for my brother or anyone to co

I was too busy trying to figure out how I wanted to celebrate my prize. After another five minutes elapsed, there was no pull. Oh no - its gone (so I thought).

As I reeled in my line, I saw that the fish was still there.

#BREAK# It didnt look secure and unfortunately I was correct. Trying to maneuver the fish to shore around the canoe was more difficult that anticipated. Then the unexpected occurred. The two empty prongs got snagged on the canoes yellow rope. And the fish falls off the one prong. Its lying in six inches of water with a canoe between us and its not moving.

I quickly drop my pole and dive onto the canoes bow. In a vain and futile attempt, I tried to pin the fish to the rivers bottom so I can secure it with both of my hands. The pickerel is slick and easily swims away. I just wanna cry, but there is no audie

The backwater formed by a swift current on the upstream side of a boulder is a favourite lurking-place of brown trout. I was fishing such places one day, and foun

For a moment I could not believe that I had seen a fish-the movement was so deliberate and I came to the conclusion that it was fancy or that a water-snake, gliding across the stream, had shown itself. Almost immediately, however, I saw the flash of a trout a

Down-stream he came until he was eight or ten feet below the rock, when, turning sharply and rising to the surface, he took from it some insect that I could not see. Up-stream again he went, and shortly resumed his position in the dead water, showing half his body as he stemmed the current at the side of the rock. Once more this performance was repeated, and I knew I had stumbled upon an interesting experience.

Hastily measuring the distance, hoping to ge

He was soundly hooked, however, and I netted a fine fish lacking one ounce of being a pound and a half. My experience heretofore had been that if a fly were placed a yard or so above this point and allowed to float down to the rock a feeding fish would rush forward-often as much as two feet-and take it, immediately turning or backing into his position again. I had assumed from this observation when the fly passed the rock or backwater without a rise it should be retriev

This fish satisfied me, however, that when really feeding, or when inclined to feed, trout may be lured comparatively long distances by inviting-looking morsels. Either he did not decide to take the fly until just as it was passing him or else he liked the exercise of the chase. In any event, he was not peculiar in his habit, because f

In most cases when the fly is cast above a boulder lying in swift water (which I consider, under certain conditions, one of the best places to look for brown trout) it will be taken as it approaches the rock, the trout darting out and retiring immediately to avoid being caught in the swifter water on either side of his stronghold. But if it is not taken, and is permitted to float down with the current, it may bring a response.

It was a somewhat similar observation which prompted the practice and, I must say, rather dubious development of what some of my friends are plea

#BREAK# This cast is supposed to represent the action of the fluttering insect, the fly merely alighting upon the water, rising, alighting again, repeating the movement three or four times at most; finally coming to rest and being allowed to float down-stream. #BREAK#

The cast is made with a very short line-never over twenty-five feet-and the fly alone touches the water. The action of the fly is very similar to that produced by the method known as "dapping," but instead of being merely dangled from the rod, as is the case when "dapping," the fly is actually cast. It should be permitted to float as far as it will after its fluttering or skipping has ceased.

The beginner practising the cast will do well to cast at right angles to the current, and he should choose rather fast water for his experimenting. The speed of the water will cause

      Smell:

Trout have amazing powers of smell. For humans, trying to understand smell underwater is rather difficult since we cant do it. However, trout have no difficulty smelling underwater, so it is worth an anglers time to make sure that they arent introducing foreign smells into a trout stream (which can warn a trout to a lurking danger such as a fisherman.)

When fly fishing for trout, do your best to avoid any artificial smells that are completely foreign to a trout stream. Avoiding these smells, though, of often easier said than done, as the sources of t

#BREAK# Fly line cleaners, fly floatants, epoxies and glue can all contribute alien smells to a trout stream. Other things such as aftershave, deodorant and even the smell of your clothing can all tip off a trout that an angler is near.

Obviously, you cant get rid of all foreign smells you may introduce into a trout stream. However, there are a number of easy things a fisherman can do to reduce the likelihood of a trout getting wise due to smell. When using fly line cleaners and fly floatants, use the

#BREAK# The cleaners and floatants are usually the same price as other non-masking chemicals, but can go a long way towards reducing the likelihood of a trout becoming alert to the fisherman due to smell.

Also, before hitting a challenging trout stream, it never hurts to leave the cologne and other fancy deodorants back in the hotel room. On a chal

      #BREAK#

Remember, trout have very powerful senses of smell. It is only logical that they will use this sense to identify flies presented their way to determine whether or not is something that is good to eat. A funny smelling fly, due to either chemical floatants or inadvertently smelling like Old Spice, is a good way to send a trout away from your fly and onto more naturally smelling food.

      Sight:

Sight is of crucial important to trout, which is not surprising. After all, its the sense that they use when determ

#BREAK# Trout, in particular, have excellent close-range vision although they lack in long-range vision. This close range vision by the trout is why so many imitation flies may fail to grab the interest of a trout the trout can easily determine if given time if the fly looks like something it is accustomed too.

A trout sees the world through what is known as the trouts window. This window is a cone shaped view that extends up from the eye at an ever-increasing diameter. Thus, the deeper the trout is, the more the trout can see.

      A trout

#BREAK# Due to their other excellent senses, trout may very well be aware of something on the water that is outside of this cone of vision. But a trout consider eating it if it sees the fly in their cone of vision.

This knowledge leads to one strategy all anglers should use when fishing to rising trout. When fly fishing to a rising trout, it is very important to drop the fly not where the rise was but upstream of where the rise was. By presenting a fly upstream from the rise, the fly will float down the river naturally, not just suddenly appearing in the trouts cone of vision, whic

      #BREAK#

Trout also have the ability to determine color, including subtle shades of color. This is why the same fly in two different colors can produce remarkably different results when fishing, the trout may simply be eating one color insect and avoiding others.

Lastly, trout also have the ability to see the profile of a fly. Of all the characteristics of a fly, this is perhaps the most important. A fly that does not have the same profile as seen from underwate

#BREAK# For this reason, it is always important to make sure that your flies float properly, especially when dry fly fishing.

Moreover, even if your dry fly is a spitting imitation of the real thing, it is not likely to draw strikes if your fly floats awkwardly (or partially sinks).

This is a good reason to avoid the real cheap flies you may see - the colors of these cheap flies may look right, but the profile is likely to be wrong when on the water.

      Sound:

      Trout

#BREAK# Trout have two sound receptors. The first one runs along the length of the fishs body. This receptor picks up frequency vibrations such as the banging of rocks or oars against a boat. A second receptor, located inside the trouts ear, is used to detect the movement of aquatic insects which the trout eats. This receptor is extremely acute, allowing the trout to hear sound frequencies well outside the human hearing range. This hearing receptor of

      #BREAK#

Because trout have such acute senses of hearing, anglers need to keep several things in mind when fishing for trout.

First, trout cant hear human voices outside of the water. Thus, having a loud conversation about something along the bank of a river will not spook the trout.

Second, trout are acutely aware of vibrations and sound that occur in the river. Banging oars on the side of a boat is a wond

#BREAK# Likewise, great care should be taken when wading. Wading loudly, either caused or by the splashing of the water or the movement of rocks beneath the anglers feet, is easily heard by a trout especially in slower moving water. In fast water, these vibrations tend to get drowned out by the current and rapids. But in slower water, such as runs or spring creeks, it is crucial that an angler take care when wading.

Third, trout are easily able to hear things that fall into a river, especially in slower water. A nearby trout can readily hear a grasshopper or other bug that falls into the river. Because of this, care must be taken in casting to prevent the fly li

#BREAK# A gently dropping fly is far more likely to attract the attention of a trout than one that gets slammed into the river due to a bad cast or too heavy of a fly or fly line.
